The contractor used a leveling compound to level the concrete floor, then he installed the custom made heat mat, which is essentially an electric heating coil attached to a very lightweight backing mesh. Then he covered it with another layer of lightweight concrete to protect, and the tile goes down on top of that. The temperature will be controlled from a timer thermostat on the wall.
