Las Ramblas

As you walk down Las Ramblas from La Placa de Catalunya towards the ocean you pass different sections of an open air market. You pass flower stalls, then there's a section with pets for sale, and towards the bay there are artists. All along the way there are street performers. Towards the right the neighborhood is kind of seedy, especially as you get closer to the ocean, and to the left is the old Gothic Quarter. We stayed in a hotel in the Gothic Quarter.

A view up Las Ramblas from the Christopher Colombus tower in the late afternoon sun. Our hotel is not visible, but is at the top of this picture, to the right in the Gothic Quarter.

Another view from the same location, this time of a church at the end of a boulevard. Speaking of boulevards... The street signs in Barcelona suck. If they are present, they are on the buildings, not on the street corners, and they're not guaranteed to be on the buildings. It makes street names very hard to spot when you're driving. But it gets better! In the newer sections of Barcelona, all of the intersections have the corners "cut off" of them, opening up the intersections and turning them into a octogonal shape. Now all of what I said above still applies, but the signs are out of sight of the intersection, where a driver crossing a street has absolutely no chance of seeing them. Obviously I enjoyed driving in Barcelona.
